Sorry Meredith...

"The Birth and Death of the Day"
Explosions In The Sky
All the Sudden I Miss Everyone

If anyone needs a lesson on how to write a song with proper dynamics that isn't over processed, this is the band for you. Their new cd All the Sudden I Miss Everyone is more of the what I have come to expect from EITS over the last 5 years. This song has so many different parts with some many different dynamics that its amazing that they managed to fit them all into one song... and make it work. Explosions in the sky continues to impress me.

"Our Nights"
Unwed Sailor
The Faithful Anchor

I was reminded of how much I love this band the other night when Justin and I were setting up at the Dickson Street Theater. If a band is going to write music without lyrics, they need to listen to how Unwed Sailor does it, and listen to this song. At work I found myself tapping along to the drums on this song. This song, for me, elicits so much anticipation as it slowly builds through the entire song and then actually delivers on that anticipation. For me this is the old emo formula that gets the juices flowing in my head.

World Spins Madly On
The Weepies
Say I am You

I have to give it to Meredith Oh(no)Neal and a somewhat poorly produced JC Penney commercial for getting me into these guys. Meredith has been telling me about these guys for about 5 months now, and the whole time I didn’t listen, and for that I feel I have delayed blessing my ears with The Weepies. This song impresses me with its simplicity and how well these guys sing together. Lyrically these guys are nothing special (yet), those this song is somewhat catchy and certainly beautiful. I would suggest this cd to anyone, because its amazing. The second guitar in this song is great, it fits in perfectly with the rhythm guitar and isn’t overbearing at all. This was the first song that jumped out to me on this cd.

Citywide Rodeo
The Weepies
Say I am You

If country sounded like this, I would like country music. Alas, country music… MOST country music can’t touch the depth in this song. This song has hints of Mindy Smith without as much folk in it. It’s good to hear a band use reverb the correct way. I also threw this song in the list so that you guys could hear what The Weepies can do. These guys are definitely easy on the ears. They are perfect for me to listen to at work; not to hard (though hard shouldn’t be used to describe them) to distract but not to lazy to put me to sleep. Def. check these guys out. They make me smile.

The Death of HiFi?

There is an article over at Rolling Stone that put into words what anyone who has paid attention to any sort of music over the last 10 years has noticed. That is, "Why does my music sound like crapcakes these days?" Take a look at it here. Below are many other sites that deal with this growing issue.

Turn Me Up!
"The Loudness War,"
Loudness War entry
"Everything Louder Than Everything Else,"
"Imperfect Sound Forever,"
"Over the Limit,"

*note: I actually had to rewrite this blog post beause it was getting close to needing two paragraphs.

Welcome!

Well, for whatever reason I have been sucked back into the bloggin scene, but not completely. Let me explain. Because I'm a very lazy person to the point where blogs that are more than 2 paragraphs make me lose interest. This can be applied towards me actually writing a blog as well. So, the question is raised, "Brian, what do you actually care about enough to read/write beyond two paragraphs?" The answer is music. I think I could probably write 5 pages about one song that moved me, or about how well it was recorded, or what time signature they were using, or how effective an artists use of dynamics were in a song.

Because of this I present fourthemusic.blogspot.com. What you will see here is me limiting myself to four songs, but not just four sentences. I like to have a bit of structure in my life somtimes. I encourage you to comment all you want; tell me I'm wrong, tell me I'm deaf, tell me I'm stupid, tell me I'm tall. So be it.
